Readability & Structure

Readability Score

Computes the Flesch-Kincaid grade level and flags passages that exceed a threshold.

What It Does

Counts words, sentences, and syllables to compute the Flesch-Kincaid grade level. Reports the score as a hint and flags documents above grade 12.

Why It Matters

Genre fiction typically targets grades 6-8. Literary fiction may push to 10-12. Anything above 12 risks losing readers — not because they can't understand it, but because it requires effort that fights engagement.

What Gets Flagged

Severity Example Why Suggested Revision
Information Grade level 14.2 Above target grade 12 Shorten sentences, prefer common words
Hint Grade level 7.3 Reported for awareness No action needed

Configuration

No configuration options. Requires minimum 100 words to compute.
