Scores the first paragraph for reader engagement — flags passive, abstract, or backstory-heavy openings.
What It Does
Analyzes the first paragraph of a document for four engagement killers:
- Weak constructions — "It was", "There was/were" at the start
- Abstract openers — "Things were changing", "It was a time of"
- Backstory dumps — heavy past-perfect clustering ("had been", "had known")
- Missing sensory anchoring — no concrete or physical detail to ground the reader
Why It Matters
The opening paragraph is the writer's only audition. Agents stop reading after the first page. Critics flag weak openings in 28.5% of DestructiveReaders critiques — the fifth most common issue.
What Gets Flagged
